"description": "Global levels of violence are at a 25-year peak, undercutting global stability, reversing development gains, and driving record levels of forced displacement. For the first time since the Cold War, violence and conflicts are increasing worldwide. Violent conflict, rather than natural disasters, is now the leading cause of forced displacement – driving an unprecedented 66 million people to flee their homes in search of safety. Curbing this rise in violence is critical to promoting peace and security. That’s why a bipartisan coalition of foreign policy leaders introduced the Global Fragility & Violence Reduction Act (GFVR) in 2018. While it passed in the House this year, there was not enough momentum to pass in the Senate. We’re calling on Congress to urgently prioritize and pass the bill in 2019. We’re ready to change the game. Studies show that investing $1 in prevention efforts saves the world $10 in recovery costs, as well as thousands of human lives. Strengthening fragile states and preventing violent conflict save both lives and money by strengthening economies, curbing refugee flows, and protecting national security through preventing dangerous power vacuums. If passed, this legislation will require the administration to launch a “Global Initiative to Reduce Fragility and Violence,” guiding U.S. government efforts to bring down levels of violence and improve efforts to prevent future violent conflicts.",
