"description": "Coal Ash Contaminants are Leaking into Lake Michigan - Lend your Voice to Protect our Water! Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO) has announced partial closure plans for the coal ash waste pits at the Michigan City Generating Station. Coal ash is a toxic waste product of burning coal for electricity. However, these plans only address the removal of a fraction of the coal ash present. The utility’s current plan ignores the historic coal ash “fill” behind steel sheet pilings along an aging, unsecure lake wall, which separates the ash from the waters of Lake Michigan. NIPSCO’s Michigan City plant site houses an estimated 2 million cubic yards of fill containing coal ash. NIPSCO’s lack of a thorough cleanup jeopardizes future redevelopment of the site, deters job creation, and poses a major contamination issue for our communities and aquatic life. NIPSCO must be held accountable for the coal ash they leave behind, and for a proper cleanup to safeguard the collective freshwater resource that we all depend on - Lake Michigan. We ask that NIPSCO revise their proposed closure plan to ensure a full cleanup, which addresses not only the coal ash from all the onsite waste pits, but also the removal of the coal ash fill along the lakefront. Sign now to help keep our lake and Northwest Indiana communities safe from coal ash pollution.",
