"description": "Per a decision by management which was announced on 1/16, supervisors are no longer allowing per-diem medical assistants to work their usual schedule. More recently, management has also stopped scheduling per-diem nurses for work. This new condition was imposed in the context of ongoing inadequate nursing staffing across CHC sites, and particularly at Riverside. This creates an unacceptable burden on the remaining workers, including: requiring some medical assistants to support multiple providers at once depriving experienced per-diem medical assistants who depended on their work in the clinics to afford life’s necessities placing inexperienced medical assistants in positions of independent responsibility before they have completed their orientation and necessary training CHU members report unprecedented stress, low morale, illness and injury as a result of this change in working conditions. These combined conditions hinder us as we work to fulfill CHC’s mission to provide safe, quality healthcare for all patients. Our patients aren't able to receive timely, high-quality care for want of staffing. We call on management to: Lift the scheduling freeze on furloughed per-diem medical assistants and nurses immediately and offer them full-time or part-time jobs. Provide furloughed per-diem staff with severance pay for time without typical hours. Cease scheduling new medical assistants (who have not completed their three week orientation periods, as well as any medical assistant who does not feel adequately trained or supported) to work independently without preceptor supervision. Staff all sites so that each provider works with one dedicated medical assistant, and schedule multiple flow nursing staff, phlebotomy, and additional support as needed so that the clinics can function and patients can receive needed care.",
