"description": "My name is Nathan Hennebry, and I am a GMB branch secretary seeking to represent the democratically held views of the majority of my members I have been a member and shop steward since 2021 On the 10th of August I was served, via email, a notice of a Rule 5 hearing before the Scottish Committee. The conduct alleged against me is that: a. On 11 June 2026, you posted on X social media, “GMB CEC rejecting opposition speakers to the CEC Statement on the war in Ukraine A statement that makes a clear call for the building of a war economy throughout Europe I was due to speak against this and was denied. ” (This tweet is a simple factual statement. Posted after the statement had been passed. Live streamed via YouTube. It was made after I was denied the democratic right to speak in opposition to the CEC statement. Opposition consistent with the views of the majority of the members I represent. This interaction can be viewed at 3:20:41 - 3:21:08 on the GMB YouTube ‘Thursday - GMB Union Congress 2026’) b. On 17 June 2026, you authored an article titled, ‘Will unions fight the war economy or help build it?’ which may have brought our union into disrepute (This article serves as an opinion and my analysis of the current state of the trade union movement at a time of growing warfare and global conflict. Highlighting unions that have aligned with Tory and Labour governments increases to "defence" spending. Multiple statements from our union calling for increases in defence spending can be found on our website. The article also highlights the clamping down of grassroots campaigning in unions against militarisation…) I’m very proud to be Chair of GMB Scotland's Young Workers Network, Shop Steward and Secretary of my GMB Branch. A branch that I, along with my reps and members, have built from the ground up. A branch that is affiliated to Stop The War Scotland, Clydebank TUC, Paisley and District TUC, the IBMT, and Morning Star. A proud branch Right now - I have just concluded our pay negations and pay ballot. All whilst being in the midst of redundancy consultations ! Trying my hardest to save jobs whilst the threat of expulsion now hangs over me. However, this has not deterred me. Recruitment in my workplace is ongoing and we continue to sign up new members ! Members who I hope would never be treated like I am being treated Like many working class youth I oppose war, because I know it’ll be young men and women like me who will be conscripted to fight in any further global conflict Britain involves itself in. I worry for the future of our union, for young members, for older members, and for the future of the entire trade union movement that we are part of. As do my members Now, I am under attack for expressing these views. What does that tell my members and what does that tell the wider membership of our union ? Are all our members, who would publicly declare to oppose war and publicly criticise actions by our union leadership in stoking the flames of war, at risk of being punished or expelled too ? So I ask you, to sign this petition calling on the GMB Scottish Committee to drop their allegations against me - threatening me with the possibility of expulsion from our union - and to let me get back to organising in my workplace, local community, and Scotland. Exercising the democratic rights to which is supposed to stand as the back bone of our union “We the undersigned: Call on the GMB Scottish Committee to drop their charges against Nathan Hennebry” We call on the GMB to cease its attacks on fellow members who oppose gross increase of defence spending, at the expense of our fellow members in the public and non military private sectors We call on the GMB to respect the rights for activists and members to free speech, freedom of debate, and the right to engage in legitimate criticism We call on the GMB to end its attacks against the decisions taken at GMB Branch level . Listening fully to the officers and steward representing the views of their members”",
