"description": "Protect Undocumented Students in Washington State Dear Washington State K-12 Educators, Administrators, and Staff: It is estimated there are 23,000 undocumented children and youth enrolled in pre-kindergarten to 12th grade in Washington State from a multitude of racial and ethnic backgrounds. A much larger number of children and youth in our state have a parent or family member who is undocumented. These undocumented students and their families, who have been particularly under threat during the election cycle and since, are experiencing increased uncertainty and fear for their safety. All students, regardless of immigration status, have a constitutional right to attend public K-12 education (Plyler vs. Doe, 457 U.S. 202, 1982). When students are faced with hostile school environments it greatly affects their academic success as well as their physical and mental health. Students who face victimization and discrimination at school have worse performance outcomes. As someone who greatly cares about the physical and emotional well-being of your students, this matter is of great importance. Thus, we urge Washington State school districts to support their school staff, undocumented students and families through the following recommended actions: Make a public statement (board resolution, proclamation, etc.) vowing to create safe spaces for undocumented student and their families. Example statements provided below. Publicly recommit and communicate the following education and human rights to school staff, students and their families: Restriction of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents’ access to your schools and school districts (ICE Sensitive Locations, Policy 10029.2, FEA Number: 306-112- 002b). Protection of student and family records and information, under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act ((FERPA), 20 U.S.C. 1232g and 34 CFR Part 99). Including, but not limited to, student and family records and information that is provided while filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Washington Application for State Financial Aid (WASFA), and college applications. Hate crime and/or hate language reporting process and incidents. Provide additional resources and training to school staff, students and families. Train teachers, staff and administrators on current policies and practices to support undocumented students and families (toolkit will be provided on January 2017). Provide spaces or information where students and families can learn about their rights and the school resources available to them Sign on to this letter to show your commitment and support for undocumented students and their families, as an individual or as a school district As a coalition of organizations and people who are devoted to promoting the well-being of students, we feel that implementing these changes institutionally and systemically would further support our undocumented students and their families. Please join us in supporting our community by continuing to uphold the education and human rights of all of our students and their families in order for them feel safe and protected.
