"description": "This May, community leaders from Freeport, Texas, are traveling to Tokyo to hold Japanese financiers accountable for funding a dangerous liquified natural gas (LNG) export project in their town. Freeport LNG is backed by $3.7 billion in Japanese public finance and billions more in private finance from Japanese megabanks. Freeport LNG is bad news. Residents are at higher risk of respiratory diseases, cancers, and even premature death because of cumulative exposure to toxic pollution created by petrochemical and LNG facilities. In 2022, Freeport LNG had an explosion that sent a fireball 450 feet into the sky, injuring those nearby and releasing almost 120,000 cubic feet of LNG. The problems with Freeport LNG are far from isolated. Exposure to harmful pollutants is common for communities near LNG terminals. LNG export terminals also worsen the climate crisis. A report co-published by Oil Change International and Greenpeace found that any further investment in US LNG export terminals is incompatible with a liveable climate. Despite the risks they pose to people and the planet, Japan continues to pour billions into massive, polluting LNG projects. Now, Freeport community leaders are rising up to hold Japan accountable. Stand with Texas leaders’ groundbreaking work by sending a letter to the Japanese funders of Freeport LNG asking them to stop funding dirty, dangerous LNG projects in Freeport or anywhere else.",
