	"description": "Dear President Tate, We are writing regarding your mandate to impose &quot;stand-still&quot; budgets. The resulting cuts will undermine our educational mission and damage Rutgers faculty and students. We strongly urge you to reconsider this detrimental course of action. Since most department expenditures are fixed, Lecturers, who have little to no job security, will bear the brunt of these cuts. Lecturers are a significant percentage of Rutgers’ teaching faculty, accounting for about a third of all undergraduate classes offered. Their compensation accounts for less than 1% of the university’s budget, while their teaching accounts for more than 7% of total revenues. Because of your mandate, Lecturers will lose appointments for Fall 2026 and beyond. As you are aware, all three faculty unions are just now entering into contract negotiations with your administration, and your mandate will undercut one of the top priorities for Lecturers during those negotiations: increased job security. At this time of existential threats to higher education from Washington, the public is watching how Rutgers responds. Your cuts will greatly injure the educational environment. Students will suffer from cancelled courses, larger class sizes, and longer time to degrees. Full-time faculty will need to pick up the slack, leaving less time for research. President Tate, we urge you to pause any budgetary actions that will damage the core mission of our university.
