"description": "Hundreds of public school teachers in Massachusetts are facing layoffs this year. Towns and cities across the state are proposing significant cuts to our schools. Boston is planning to lay off 400 teachers. Middleboro, 29. Chelsea 70. Brookline 80. Framingham 51. Grafton 18. More than 1,000 public school positions could be cut. We’re calling on Governor Maura Healey, the state legislature, and local elected officials to use reserve and free cash funds to prevent any layoffs of education workers. The money is there to prevent our public education workers from losing their jobs and our students from losing the support and programs they need. Our state has over $8 billion in the Massachusetts Commonwealth Stabilization Fund—the state’s "Rainy Day" fund— which exists to cover budget shortfalls. The Fair Share Amendment, also known as the Millionaires Tax, which was passed by voters in 2022, generated $3.85 billion for education last year alone. This money should be used to keep education workers employed. Local funds should also go toward preventing layoffs. Boston has $500+ million in its Rainy Day fund, nearly 10x the $53 million it takes to stop the proposed layoff of 400 workers. Every child deserves quality education and full access to the programs and support they need. We should make sure public education is fully funded and staffed, and that starts with saying no to these cuts to our public schools.",
