	"description": "Every year, the local governments of Pierce County receive a combined total of billions of dollars in taxes and fees. Currently, these funds are deposited in private banks, often trillion-dollar institutions that are chartered outside the state, where they are used to maximize profits for shareholders. In return, taxpayers only receive a marginal interest rate. Taxpayers of Tacoma and Pierce County should retain control of their deposits, one of their most valued assets. A public bank would allow taxpayers to keep their interest and direct investment where it&#x27;s most needed. For this reason, we, the undersigned, strongly urge the elected leaders of the City of Tacoma and Pierce County to pursue the creation of a public bank that will utilize taxpayer’s deposits to make loans to housing, public transit, clean energy, and infrastructure, in addition to providing liquidity to the county’s community banks and credit unions. This would increase our local budgets and help stabilize our economies in contrast to the high stakes gambling of Wall Street.",
