"description": "Teachers, firefighters, families, service workers, and countless other residents integral to the lifeblood of San Francisco find themselves priced out of the housing market. The city must build 82,000 new housing units, 47,000 of which must be affordable, by 2031. In 2022, we only added 2,807 units, with 1,207 designated as below market rate. The housing crisis facing San Francisco, and the accompanying state mandate, leaves no debate: we must build housing to alleviate our displacement, affordability and homelessness crisis. Not on a few parcels scattered across the city, but everywhere. One of these locations is Parcel K, located in the heart of Hayes Valley. In 1999, San Francisco voters approved Proposition I to use the land freed up by the removal of the Central Freeway for housing. This created 22 “parcels”, A through V. Seven of these parcels were designated for affordable housing, including Parcel K, a 11,430 square foot lot at the corner of Hayes and Octavia Streets, next to Patricia's Green park. Image courtesy of San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development Owned by the Mayor’s Office of Housing and Community Development, and with no upfront cost for acquiring the site, Parcel K is a prime candidate for 100% affordable housing. But despite a promise more than two decades in the making, its designation for affordable housing is currently under threat. Sign this petition to call upon the city's leadership to prioritize the development of affordable housing on Parcel K. Let's take collective action to ensure that San Francisco remains a city where all its residents can thrive. Until the people working in Hayes Valley can afford to live in Hayes Valley, we must continue to build affordable housing wherever possible, especially on lots already owned by the city and designated as such.",
