"description": "San Franciscans are taking extreme measures to limit the spread of Coronavirus. While those steps are absolutely essential to protect the public health, they're also having a devastating impact on our local businesses. Hotels are 90% vacant and many will soon close because they can't cover the costs of staying open. Bars and restaurants downtown are down 40-60%. Lots of small businesses were barely hanging on to begin with, and this will push them over the edge. We expect to more closures as the virus drags on, because shutting down permanently is cheaper than shutting down temporarily. We urge the Board of Supervisors and the Mayor to take immediate action to support small businesses and their employees. City officials should consider the following measures, along with any others suggested by the small business community: Provide financial aid to businesses impacted by the coronavirus Provide financial aid to employees and gig workers who are not getting their normal wages Provide financial aid to employees and gig workers who stay home to self-quarantine and do not receive paid leave from their employers Defer tax payments, loan payments, and other fees placed on small businesses Guarantee that businesses that close will be able to reopen without going through the normal permitting process We also ask that private citizens who are comfortable patronizing local businesses to make sure to tip generously and remember the challenges our local businesses are facing.",
