"description": "Grove Street is one of the least safe streets in Montclair. Township data show it as one of the highest risk corridors in the town, with dozens of crashes from 2021 to 2023. While the town and county have recently cut the speed limit on Grove Street, ample evidence shows that just changing the speed limit without redesigning the road will not slow town drivers. Traffic calming is necessary to reduce crashes and prevent deaths in accordance with Montclair’s Vision Zero plan. Traffic calming can take many forms, and Grove Street could benefit from many of them, including bumpouts, lane narrowing, even planting trees But, evidence shows that adding a protected bike lane is among the most effective ways to slow down traffic and make streets safer. Creating a protected bike lane along Grove would bring other benefits to the town. Grove Street is a major north-south artery connecting northeast Montclair (a region underserved by mass transit) with the downtown area, including Walnut Street Station, Bay Street station, the future grocery store at Lackawanna Plaza, and the future Glen Ridge Avenue bike path with its easy access to downtown Montclair. In addition, it also passes directly in front of Northeast School, and could potentially facilitate cycle access to Watchung Elementary School, Renaissance Middle School, and Montclair high school. Promoting biking would also benefit the community more broadly. Biking brings economic benefits, promotes public health, increases community, and–because half of Montclair’s greenhouse gas emissions are from vehicles–is one of the best ways to address the ongoing climate crisis. We can redesign Grove Street into the Grove Street Greenway, a transportation which is open and usable by all, equally -- cars, bikes, and pedestrians. We can have a Grove Street which establishes connection, builds community, and fosters beauty and sustainability.",
