"description": "For the past century, Idaho's ballot-initiative process has given ordinary citizens a chance to make their voice heard and hold their government accountable. During the 2025 legislative session, Idaho legislators have mounted an aggressive attack on citizen-led initiatives. One proposal would give Idaho’s governor the power to immediately veto any initiative that doesn’t pass with 66.7% of the vote—even if an initiative is clearly backed by the majority of voters. No other state in the country gives a single elected official the power to overrule the will of the majority. Another proposal would require initiatives receive 60% of the vote to pass, up from the current requirement of a simple majority (50% + one vote). This requirement would give a minority of voters (just 41%) the power to overrule the majority. Yet another proposal would ratchet up signature-gathering requirements and make it nearly impossible for citizens to qualify an initiative for the ballot. By requiring signatures from all 35 of Idaho’s legislative districts (up from the 18 districts currently required), the proposal would empower a single district to block the will of the majority in 34 other districts. In 2021, the Idaho Supreme Court ruled that a 35-district requirement would violate the rights of Idaho citizens. Knowing that the proposal is unconstitutional, legislators are now going for the jugular by attempting to amend the constitution. Each of these proposals is a brazen attack on Idaho’s proud tradition of citizen-led initiatives. Will you sign the petition and ask lawmakers to protect our initiative rights and reject all anti-initiative proposals?",
