Kids will do better in school, it will increase public safety, and even property values will improve since people will be less transient and able to raise repair issues without fear of retaliation. Buffalo and Erie County have among the highest eviction rates in the entirety of New York State. Furthermore, these numbers don’t even include tenants who’ve been asked to leave by their landlord and who did so shortly after, meaning their landlord didn’t file for eviction. Buffalo is a city with a poverty rate 65% higher than the state average, and Good Cause would give tenants a level playing field when negotiating rent increases with their landlord. Nearly half of Buffalo residents are cost-burdened, paying more than 30% of their gross income on rent.",
