"description": "1 in 3 adults in Rhode Island, roughly 300,000 people, have a past arrest or conviction record. People with records face substantial barriers to securing employment, housing, and education. 94% of employers, 90% of landlords, and 72% of colleges and universities nationwide conduct background checks. Those with records are often automatically disqualified regardless of the offense, time since last conviction, and the candidate’s qualifications. Past mistakes should not prevent people from rebuilding their lives and contributing to their communities. Thirteen states and Washington, D.C. have passed Clean Slate automated record sealing laws, clearing the path for 18 million people to have a meaningful second chance. Sign this petition to urge your state legislators to pass the Rhode Island Clean Slate Act this 2027 legislative session. A state built on Hope should believe in second chances, not prevent people from earning them.",
