"description": "You are invited to an evening with environmentalist, writer and Green Party legend Jonathon Porritt. The evening will raise funds for the Eastern Region Green Party's campaign to get Adrian Ramsay elected as the region's first Green MP at the next General Election. The event will take place at the beautiful Abbey Hall, just outside Eye, which lies in the heart of the Green Party's target constituency, the Waveney Valley. The evening will consist of two parts, and you can sign up for one or both. Part I: 5pm-6.30pm Talk and Q&A with Jonathon Porritt, followed by a panel discussion with Jonathon and other Greens. Part II: 6.30pm-9pm Evening reception with drinks and canapés and a chance to speak further with Jonathon and the panel members. We'll be closing the evening with a small art auction made possible by our kind members and artist supporters. All proceeds go to the Eastern Region Green Party. About the speaker: Jonathon Porritt is one of Britain's most eminent writers and environmental campaigners, with a long track record in the Green movement. He was Co-Chair of the Green Party between 1980 and 1983, but has also been Director of Friends of the Earth (1984-90) and Chair of the UK Sustainable Development Commission between 2000 and 2009, providing high-level advice to Government Ministers. In 1996, he co-founded Forum for the Future, a leading international sustainable development charity, working with business and civil society to accelerate the shift toward a sustainable future. He is President of The Conservation Volunteers and is involved in the work of many other NGOs and groups. His latest book, Hope in Hell (Simon & Schuster, 2020, revised 2021) is a powerful ‘call to action’ on the Climate Emergency. About the venue: Abbey Hall lies a 10 minute walk outside Eye, on the site of the former Benedictine Priory of St Peter built in 1011. The former Abbey Farm Barn was Listed at Risk in 1974 and has been under the watchful eye of English Heritage and Suffolk Archaeology. The Barn has been carefully revived as an open space for events and exhibitions. Owners Olivia Pomp and Gary Rowland worked with local builders James Newstead and Julian White to create the house and barn with a dual focus on heritage and sustainability.
