"description": "About the session COVID-19 (coronavirus) is creating a variety of challenges, including having an impact on people's wellbeing and the levels of peaceful coexistence in the household. This 2-hour session will provide participants with some practical strategies for fostering compassionate ways of being towards themselves and/or others in moments of uncertainty, anxiety, and distress. The session has two parts. The first part will focus on compassionate ways of being with oneself. Here we will practice the use of Focussing as a tool for advancing self-care and self-awareness. The second part will focus on compassionate ways of being with others. Here we will explore the utility of active listening as a tool for understanding others and improving relationships, and have opportunities to practice the use of such skills in small groups. This session will be of interest to anyone interested in self-care and personal development. The session will also appeal to those involved in the helping professional (e.g. teachers, educators, social workers, youth workers, activists) who are looking to develop knowledge and skills related to forms of reflective practice, active listening, and facilitative dialogue. About the facilitator Phill Gittins is World BEYOND War’s Education Director. Besides a PhD in International Conflict Analysis, Masters in Education, and a Bachelors in Youth and Community Development, Phill is a also certified Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) Practitioner and qualified humanistic counsellor and psychotherapist. Over the years, he has used (and taught the use of) a variety of therapeutic strategies to help individuals and groups gain greater insight into their lives, address problematic issues, and achieve the change they seek. His teaching (and mentoring) in this area includes psychology students in colleges and universities; practitioners in the helping profession wanting to develop and apply counselling skills to inform their work; and professional development training courses for practicing psychologists, counsellors, and psychotherapists in various continents and countries.",
