LD 1816 "An Act To Promote Labor Education through the University of Maine System,” sponsored by House Speaker Ryan Fecteau, will: 1) Establish a new labor and community education center at USM and 2) Expand the capacity and funding of the University of Maine's Bureau of Labor Education. The proposed "Dr. Charles A. Scontras Labor Center" at USM will focus on providing lifelong community-based labor education, research and outreach. It will offer labor education for students, unions and especially the community at large as well as host regular trainings and workshops, working class oral history projects, conferences, symposia, and speakers and films on issues important to Maine's working people. The bill will also provide additional funding for the Bureau of Labor Education to expand its work supporting Maine workers and unions.
