Protect Mass Workers from Harmful A.I.

Workers are at the epicenter of the greatest technological transformation of the modern era – our rights and economic security are at stake. Now more than ever, working class people need strong safeguards to protect from the harmful effects of artificial intelligence and other algorithmic tools so that we can lean in on the beneficial parts of this technology without being expected to sacrifice our privacy, our data, our job security or our humanity in the process. The FAIR Act (H.77 & S.35, An act fostering artificial intelligence responsibility) creates commonsense guardrails on artificial intelligence to protect workers while supporting the benefits of innovative technology. We need you to ask your legislators to cosponsor the FAIR Act to ensure Massachusetts prioritizes human workers and promotes responsible artificial intelligence use in the workplace. Employers are increasingly using new technologies that rely on AI and machine learning to hire, discipline, monitor, promote, and fire workers. At the same time, employers have started incorporating these technologies into the regular job responsibilities and expectations of their employees. In some industries, AI and similar technologies have begun to replace workers altogether – often with little support for the existing workforce. In just the next few years, nearly half of all jobs will have some form of AI automation that will disrupt and displace workers. The FAIR Act ensures workers have strong protections from the harmful effects of AI in three key areas: Restricting the surveillance of workers by restricting the collection, use, transfer, and sale of employee data and prohibiting the use of such data to punish employees engaged in a protected labor activity. Promoting human autonomy and expertise by giving workers the right to refuse to follow an AI system’s directives free from retaliation if they reasonably believe following the directive would result in an adverse outcome. Regulating the use of AI in the workplace by preventing employers from solely relying on automated decision systems (ADS) to make employment related decisions Labor unions do not oppose AI. AI has the potential to unleash prosperity that improves working conditions and lifts us all up. But if left unchecked in the hands of corporate profiteers, AI will make the rich richer, the poor poorer, and the middle class smaller as it infringes on our rights and undermines our democracy. Urge your legislators to cosponsor the FAIR Act today!
