We have made a lot of progress in California. California Common Cause helped pass (and then sued to implement) automatic voter registration. We regularly fight back Voter ID laws. And we work across California counties to ensure new election systems like the Voters Choice Act are implemented in a way that guarantees access for all eligible voters. But there are several ways California’s elections remain unequal. And the biggest way may be the barriers that still stand in the way of limited-English speaking immigrant voters. For many years the federal Voting Rights Act (VRA) has required counties to provide robust language assistance, but its reach is simply not broad enough for California. In order to receive language assistance under the VRA a language community has to reach a relatively high population threshold in their county of residence, and certain language communities are excluded from the federal law entirely. This leaves dozens of California’s language communities, especially our smaller ones, without access to these supports and services. AB 884, Low that would fix this problem. Our bill would translate voter registration materials and ballots into more languages, giving California’s smaller language communities the same level of access that larger language communities already experience under the federal Voting Rights Act and English-speaking voters have always enjoyed. Tomorrow, your Assemblymember will be voting on language access (AB 884, Low). Can you write to them today to urge them to vote YES?
