The health and safety of our communities depends on it. The House of Representatives will soon vote on the SPEED Act, which would gut the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) to make it easier for big polluters to force communities to accept their dirty, dangerous projects. NEPA ensures that the public has a right to learn about a project’s risks, voice their opposition, and propose alternatives to industry’s harmful vision for their communities. The fossil fuel industry and other extractive industries want to hollow out NEPA because they’re determined to silence public opposition and hide information about just how damaging their projects are. It’s spent millions on campaign contributions and lobbying visits to members of Congress to get them to take up its cause – at our expense.
