Amazon’s distribution facilities have a track record of negative impacts on public health and the environment, including significantly increased traffic, runoff from paved areas, and pollution from lights, noise, and truck exhaust. Amazon is also known for exploiting its workers with low-paying jobs with dangerous and dehumanizing working conditions, while taking high-paying union jobs away from postal workers. Community members in Gorham have repeatedly spoken out against the proposed warehouse, but the town continues to move forward with the sale of the land. This event is designed for community members in Gorham and beyond to speak out against the warehouse and reimagine how the town land could be used. When: Saturday, August 8 from 1-4 pm. Throughout the day, we will have art, music, tabling from community organizations, guided nature walks, and ice cream! At 1:30 pm, there will be a rally with speakers and community connection. Come anytime to learn about efforts to oppose the Amazon Warehouse in Gorham and how you can get involved. Where: The event will be held at the proposed site of the Amazon warehouse, located on Route 25 (Main St.) across from Dolloff Rd. and Angelo's Pizza. Parking is limited, so we ask that people carpool, bike, or walk to minimize the number of cars. When you arrive, look for our signs and volunteers directing you where to park. Accessibility: The event will be held outside rain or shine. The land has been cleared and the tables and rally will be in a mostly flat area a short walk from the road, but the ground is somewhat uneven and may not be accessible for wheelchair users or people with limited mobility. The optional nature walks will include more wild and uneven terrain, and exposure to ticks. People are welcome to bring chairs and we will have a few available. We will have water and some shaded areas to cool off in if it is hot.
