***Location Currently TBD*** Join DSA LA’s Housing and Homelessness Committee as we read Abolish Rent by Tracy Rosenthal and Leonardo Vilchis, two of the cofounders of the Los Angeles Tenants Union (LATU) - the largest tenant union in the country. As socialists, we support working class organizing in all its forms, whether that be at our workplaces, in our communities, or in our homes, and we are reading Abolish Rent to deepen our understanding of what that struggle on the terrain of housing and land use looks like. In the decade since it was founded in 2015, LATU has worked with thousands of tenants across the city, to prevent displacement, end harassment, and force corrupt and incompetent city officials to act in tenants’ favor. Abolish Rent is a result of that experience, laying out the tactics and political orientations that LATU has developed over decade of tenant organizing, community building, and struggle against landlords, developers, and the political system that empowers them. For the first session, we will be reading the Introduction and Chapter One of this book (pages 1 to 33). This reading group will be open to all DSA members, and we encourage anyone who is interested in reading this book to join. If you need a copy of the book, we will have about 10 copies available to buy for $15, and we have digital copies to share as well.
