Community Organising Residential for Students Unions - 2026

This now annual training has been running since 2023, and introduced Community Organising to hundreds of SU staff and officers. Key questions this training covers: What is power? How can a Students Union build it? How can we deeply understand the priorities of our communities? How can I give people the tools and encouragement to lead themselves (instead of doing things for them)? How can we run exciting, energising action that wins change? How can we build relationships with our wider community rooted in shared priorities? What does this mean for my Students Union and how we work? It will be delivered by experienced, professional, Community Organisers who understand your context. It is designed to support SUs considering membership of our civic alliances, or thinking about how they might engage with the world beyond their campus more impactfully. Previous trainees have gone on to lead major regional actions, transform their SU, and lead countless other bits of amazing organising. This is suitable for (and has been attended by) people of all staff roles and grades, including CEOs and Senior Management. We believe that the mixed cohort allows for a very different kind of training. Based on feedback we have worked hard to bring down our costs, and will be passing those savings on to you! Costings: Members' Ticket - £400 - For Students' Unions that are members of Citizens UK Referral Ticket - £450 - For Students' Unions that are exploring membership and have been referred by a Citizens UK Organiser Non Member Ticket - £550 - For Students' Unions that are interested in the training only. All tickets include accommodation and food. Additional nights of accommodation before and after for those who need it is available, at an additional cost. As we believe our method is most impactful when permanent staff as well as officers are putting it into practice - we ask that each SU that wishes to send officers, also sends at least one member of staff. If you have trained and experienced permanent staff, we may be able to make an acceptation to this. Read reflections from Lancashire SU's Director of Engagement & Enterprise here. Read some of what we have been up to across the movement here. Feedback from our Students' Union Training: "After attending the Citizens UK Community Change Conference, I felt powerful. I now feel I have the tools and confidence to make long lasting and impactful change for Reading Students' Union and the wider community."-Sophie Jordan, Education Officer, Reading Students’ Union "The Community Organising residential was great! … It was also helpful to understand the ways that SU’s can be more outward facing and have more influence at a local community level." - Jess, Community Project Coordinator, Sheffield Students’ Union "The trainers were really great and engaging. Their training style of opening up about some personal things made it really easy to relate to them. Very engaging and great training." "Felt a comfortable space to share in. Great to hear stories. Discussions on power and campaigning." "One of the best training sessions I've ever attended." "Enjoyed watching team's excitement about putting things into practice; felt I took away some good idea about how this could work in practice"
