Defeating the far-right: What do we do now?

After the horrific murders in Southport, the far-right mobilised. Up and down the country they attacked shops, threatened and attacked people from ethnic minority groups, and tried to burn a library and a hotel to the ground. But worse than this was that in many places these far-right thugs were being cheered on or even joined by local people as MPs from Reform UK seemed to legitimise the violence. Things may have calmed for the moment, but the frightening opportunities provided by social media, and the capacity for violence of the far-right, coupled with the inflammatory rhetoric of Farage, Musk and Robinson, are providing a racist lightning rod to the resentment in our communities built up over decades. For years, the Ella Baker School has argued that if we don’t support people to address their grievances around housing, employment and poverty then the far-right, whether that be the street gangs, or the parasites in suits, will channel that resentment into racist organisation. We are at a turning point. We know that there are far more of us than there are of them, but unless we act to defeat the narratives of division they will grow, and as they grow, the potential for further violence and destruction increases. Join us this Thursday 15 August, online, as we discuss: what do we do now?
