Energy Affordability for All Despite all the rhetoric from some politicians about affordability, the cost of utilities have only gone up. Even though there are clear and common sense policies that have been advocated for year after year, Rhode Island Energy and their political allies continue to oppose these solutions. Energy Affordability for All Monday April 20, 5:30pm George Wiley Center 32 East Ave. Pawtucket, RI 02860 Join national energy policy expert Diana Hernández, legislative and community leaders for community presentations, a press briefing, and book signing. Learn about policy proposals via community presentations about: Rate restructuring that would lower utility costs: Pass Percentage Income Payment Plan Now We demand that Rhode Island Energy, legislators, and public officials support and approve an effective approach that would cap utilities costs to a total of 6% of income for low-income Rhode Islanders. Protect vulnerable utility consumers with medical conditions Rhode Island Energy (RIE) continues to use unfair utility terminations to maximize their profits, even against people with medical conditions. RIE jeopardizes public health when they oppose efforts to strengthen serious illness protections. We need to allow medical professionals to determine the length of protections, rather than the current policy that requires people going through medical crises to renew every 21 days. Proposals that would cap profits of utility companies Utility consumers are funding the profits of Rhode Island Energy, our expensive bills finance shareholders’ and CEOs’ exorbitant wealth. It is time for fairness and for utility companies to share the burden that we pay toward some of the highest utilities in the country. Followed by Dr. Diana Hernández signing her important book about energy insecurity: “Powerless: The People’s Struggle for Energy”
