Fiber Arts Group Meeting | Monday, February 9th, 7pm

	<thumbnail_url>https://can2-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/groups/default_facebook_images/000/126/918/original/DC-DSA-Logo-12-2018_(1).png?1581560387</thumbnail_url>

Welcome to DC DSA’s Fiber Arts group! This group aims to promote, celebrate, and build community around the fiber arts, including knitting, crocheting, sewing, embroidering, felting, and needle-punching. This group is be a way for members to develop fiber skills, mitigate burnout, and connect organizers who normally work in different realms. We plan to have sessions dedicated to learning skills such as darning and patching, as well as creating agitpop for the chapter and other radical causes, both for visibility and fundraising projects. Overall, we believe having a fiber arts community strengthens our bonds as organizers and community members while curating a low-barrier space where organizers can exchange ideas and be creative. Our first event of the year will be an embroidery workshop! Join us on Monday, January 26 to embellish your clothes with leftist designs. We love wearable art! Bring your own thrifted items, old clothes, or potential patches to embroider with whatever design(s) your heart desires. We will have some designs available (you can count on some anti-capitalist agitprop), but if you have something specific in mind, please bring it! You don’t need to have any prior embroidery experience, although some basic hand sewing knowledge is encouraged. Items to bring: Embroidery needles: please bring your own embroidery needles! You can find these at your local craft store. Clothes: bring the item you would like to embroider! This can be a t-shirt, sweatshirt, jeans, whatever you’d like. While woven fabric is typically easier to embroider, a tightly knit fabric (think a lightly stretchy t-shirt) can also work very nicely. We encourage you to bring something you already own or something thrifted—we love to upcycle, rather than buy anything new. Gossip/Chisme: what’s a stitch-sesh without stories? Items we provide: Embroidery hoops: we will have 14 embroidery hoops for attendees to use! As this is a limited supply, do bring your own hoop if you already have one. Embroidery floss: we will provide a range of embroidery thread for you to use. Of course, if you have a specific vision for what you’d like to create, certainly feel free to bring your own! Scrap fabric: looking to embroider a patch? we will have some scrap fabric on hand for your use. Designs: if you don’t already have a design in mind, we will have some printed and traceable designs for you to use. There will be some leftist slogans and text, as well as some graphics. If you already know what you’d like to create, excellent! We can’t wait to see it :) Water-soluble fabric: designed to melt away in water after finishing a project, water-soluble fabric is efficient and easy-to-use for embroidery. You just need to trace your design onto the fabric and stick it on the item you are embroidering. We will provide a limited amount of water-soluble fabric for those who don’t already have some at home. Basic embroidery tips: in addition to our hosts’ knowledge, we will have a couple of books/visual guides to basic embroidery stitches. While you don’t need any previous embroidery experience for this workshop (we’re happy to teach!), it will be helpful to have some very basic hand-sewing knowledge (i.e. how to thread a needle, how to do a basic stitch or two). We can’t wait to sew with you! If you aren’t able to make it, but would like to stay in the loop for future events, please email us at dcfiberartscollective@gmail.com. Monday, February 9th 7pm to 9pm The Festival Center See you soon!
