YJAM was inspired by the advocacy of Tracy McClard, the mother of an incarcerated child who raised public awareness about the injustice of the criminal and juvenile legal systems. Led by the Campaign for Youth Justice, what began in 2008 as a 5K race in Missouri has evolved into a nationally-recognized month dedicated to shedding light on an issue that impacts nearly 200,000 youth each year. From October 7-9, 2019, the Georgetown Juvenile Justice Initiative will host 3 evenings of events, themed Act, Inspire, Lead: Transforming Youth Justice as part of our Youth Justice Action month celebration. These events will inspire advocacy and activism in youth justice, amplify the voices of youth activists, and educate attendees on the work of local organizations to protect the rights of youth. On Monday, October 7th we will have: · Youth artists and activists stationed at tables will introduce their work. Attendees may walk to each table to learn more about their work and ways to support/get involved. · Richard Ross, creator of Juvenile in Justice, Girls in Justice, and Juvie Talk, will discuss how he uses photography to shed light on the placement and treatment of American youth housed in detention facilities. Refreshments will be provided. Join us!
