No to ecocide! No to genocide! Barclays: stop arming Israel, stop funding fossil fuels Saturday 16 November is the Day of Action for Global Climate Justice. It is also the Boycott Barclays Day of Action. Protest outside Barclays Bank, High Street, from 11am Bike ride, assemble at Pigeon Park, 11am In Birmingham the climate justice movement and the Palestine solidarity movement are joining forces to demand that Barclays Bank stops funding genocide and stops funding dirty energy. END FOSSIL FUELS UK banks continue to pour tens of billions of pounds into fossil fuel expansion, a year on from the UK Government publishing it’s Green Finance Strategy that contained no meaningful measures to wind down fossil fuel financing. Five UK lenders – Barclays, HSBC, Standard Chartered, Lloyds and Natwest – channeled almost £39 billion (USD 48.349 billion) of new money into fossil fuels in 2023. This was more than these five lenders poured into fossil fuels in 2022 (USD 47.704 billion). Barclays remains the biggest financier of dirty energy in Europe, having significantly increased its financing of fossil fuels in 2023 from 2022 figures. Crucially, almost a third of the financing provided to fossil fuels from these UK banks in 2023 went to companies that are expanding fossil fuel production. None of the fossil fuel companies financed were judged to have credible plans to transition in line with 1.5 degrees of warming. In total, the figures suggest that the five banks have together financed fossil fuels to a total of £437 billion (USD 537.451 billion) since 2016. (These figures are taken from the 2024 Banking on Climate Chaos report. More here: https://positivemoney.org/press-release/banking-on-climate-chaos-2024-positive-money-response/ ) STOP THE GENOCIDE Barclays has ramped up its bankrolling of companies selling arms to Israel’s occupation and apartheid regime by 55% since 2021 – including tripling its shares in Elbit Systems, Israel’s largest arms company. This is happening despite Israel committing plausible genocide against the Palestinian people. Barclays invests £2 billion, along with £6.1 billion in loans and underwriting, to nine arms companies supplying weapons, components and military technology to Israel’s apartheid regime. Elbit Systems’ weapons are being used by Israel to bomb Palestinian civilians and civilian infrastructure across the Gaza Strip – this is plausible genocide, as stated by the International Court of Justice – with Israel killing over 41,000 Palestinians, and injuring over 96,000. While Barclays continues to profit from Israel’s plausible genocide of the Palestinian people, public pressure in recent years encouraged other financial institutions end their complicity in human rights abuses. People power stopped Barclays bankrolling apartheid South Africa. (More here: https://waronwant.org/news-analysis/barclays-bankrolling-genocide-apartheid ) Join us in taking action to end Barclays’ complicity in Israel’s genocide and financing climate chaos on Saturday 16 November in Birmingham. "The fight for climate justice is a fight against the fossil fuel industries and destruction of the environment just as much as it is a fight against the weapon industries, militarisation and the overextraction of natural resources in communities in the most affected areas. The climate justice movement must be a decolonial, anti capitalist, antifascist movement that fights against genocide as well as ecocide, that demands liberation and justice for all, and a system that puts people and planet over profit. Even if the world tries to silence us we will come back even louder, because everything is at stake. There can be no climate justice on occupied land." - Greta Thunberg “Movements against climate arson are converging with movements against genocide and unfettered greed. The next wave of rebellion is coming.” - Naomi Klein Supported by: Climate Justice Coalition West Midlands PSC XR Birmingham Big Ride For Palestine Birmingham Friends of the Earth Birmingham Race Impact Group Birmingham Fair Housing Campaign PCS Midlands Region Birmingham NEU Friction Arts Better Streets For Birmingham Peace Hub Tipping Point War On Want Campaign Against Climate Change
