Health insurance is America is too hard to get, too expensive, and often does not cover what we need and expect, when we need it. Denying pre-authorizations, refusing to pay for life-changing medications, or sticking patients with big bills when services are deemed to be not covered are strategies that insurance companies use to make profit while we get sicker. We can fight back by appealing insurance denials and making sure we get the coverage we are entitled to! At least 45% of Americans with private insurance have experienced a denial or a charge for something they thought would be covered by their insurance – probably more! When patients do appeal, over half of the win, just by fighting back However, at least 60% of us say we don’t fight back because the process is purposefully made hard and confusing Uniting to make it easier for patients to appeal and win is one way we can fight back against insurance companies together, as a union. The Patients Union is fighting back by preparing clear, useful, and actionable information about what to do when an insurance company says they won’t cover something you need. Join The Patients Union for upcoming online information sessions on how to fight an insurance denial. Our first sessions are: Jun 8, 2026 at 8pm ET / 7pm CT / 6pm MT / 5pm PT Jun 13, 2026 at 4pm ET / 3pm CT / 2pm MT / 1pm PT These 90-minute sessions will include actionable information from fellow patients and a healthcare lawyer. Each session will include some background on how we got here and information to help us get the care we need. We will also have some opportunities for individual Q&A and ways to stay connected and access more resources after each session. *Spanish and ASL translation available // Traducción al español y ASL disponsible.
