Central CT DSA is hosting a Socialist Night School on Saturday, March 13 at 1:00pm ET on the Swedish Tenants’ Union (Hyresgästföreningen) with a presentation by labor and tenant historian Hannes Rolf. Existing for nearly a century with roots in militant labor and tenant organizing, the Swedish Tenants’ Union is among the most powerful tenant unions in the world and has been integral to the building of affordable social housing in Sweden. With over 500,000 households in membership, the Swedish Tenants’ Union is federated at the local, regional & national levels, and collectively bargains with private landlords and municipalities on matters related to rent and conditions. Together we will learn lessons from the history and present-day Swedish Tenants' Union that can inform our work here in the United States. Hannes Rolf has a Ph.D. in social welfare and is affiliated with the Center for Civil Society Research at Ersta Sköndal Bräcke University College, Stockholm and with the Institute for Housing and Urban Research, Uppsala University. His research areas are mainly political history and social movement history, and he is especially interested in the history of the labour movement and housing. Hannes's thesis was a study of the Swedish tenants' movement in the late 19th and early 20th century.
