Militarism and climate disruption are intimately linked, a reality often not understood. Marcy Winograd of CODE PINK CONGRESS and Janet Weil of Veterans for Peace will explain how. The Pentagon is the largest institutional consumer of oil and, therefore, the largest single U.S. emitter of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Brown University's Cost of War Project reports that the Pentagon's GHGs exceed those of many industrialized nations. Yet, both major US parties continue to propose higher and higher budgets and expand US military presence around the world. Join us to explore more of the facts and talk about how to make change. Marcy Winograd, Coordinator of CODE PINK CONGRESS, is also Co-chair of the End Wars and Occupations Team for Progressive Democrats of America. Marcy is a long-time anti-war activist who served as a 2020 DNC delegate to Bernie Sanders and co-founded the Progressive Caucus of the California Democratic Party. Marcy's activism began in high school when she marched against the Vietnam War and later joined the defense team of Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg. A retired English and government teacher, Marcy blogs about militarism and foreign policy at Common Dreams. Janet Weil is a longtime peace activist. A military family member and Lifetime Associate Member of Veterans For Peace, she serves on the VFP Climate Crisis and Militarism Project. For several years she worked on CODEPINK's national staff, including organizing for the Bring Our War Dollars Home campaign. In November 2015 Janet was an organizer in the huge march and rally in Oakland CA in the lead up to the Paris Climate Negotiations. Janet lives in Portland, Oregon, where she is also active with Extinction Rebellion. Sponsored by 350NH and NH Peace Action.
