We're screening Finding the Money, the documentary following economist Stephanie Kelton as she takes apart the idea that government spending has to work like a household budget. Public banking and social housing both run into the same "where's the money" objection eventually, and this film is where we start answering it. Screening this film isn't an endorsement of Modern Monetary Theory (MMT). It's a starting point for learning the theory, discussing it, and critiquing it, including from a Socialist perspective that doesn't always line up with MMT's own conclusions. Co-hosted with Patrick L. of Modern Money Lab and Gus D. of Maine People's Alliance. Doors open at 6:00 PM, the film starts at 6:30 PM, and we'll open it up for discussion once it wraps. Snacks and drinks provided. This is happening at our office in downtown Portland. We don't publish the address publicly, so we'll email it to everyone who RSVPs 24 hours out. If you have accessibility needs, including wheelchair access, let us know when you RSVP and we'll follow up on what's available at the space. Masking is voluntary at this event. If you'd need masking in place for your own safety, tell us when you RSVP and we'll accommodate that. Space is limited, so RSVP early to hold your spot.
