As heat season approaches, New Yorkers will bear the burden of peak hour electricity bills, worsened by AI data centers that add loads to our powerlines. At this very moment, at least 39 new hyperscale data centers are awaiting permits in New York State and are collectively projected to use about 11 GW of power. That power alone equals 1.5 times the average usage of all New York households combined. This means higher electricity bills for all of us, worse air quality from the onsite diesel generators that hyperscale data centers require, pollutants in our water and unmeasured environmental effects in their host communities. We need a New York State Data Center Moratorium and we need it NOW. This moratorium will put a 3 year pause on permitting for new data centers and allow time for the Department of Environmental Conservation to complete a comprehensive environmental impact statement and for the Public Service Commission to generate a report on ratepayer cost impacts.
