Poli-ed: ICE: History, Power, and Its Impact

This political education session will take a critical look at Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE): how it was created, how it operates today, and how immigration enforcement functions as a tool of state power that harms immigrants, workers, and entire communities. The first part of the meeting will provide an overview of ICE, including its history, structure, and expansion, with a focus on recent changes in 2025–2026. We will examine how ICE enforcement and detention have grown dramatically, how policies have shifted toward prolonged detention and deportation, and how these changes affect both immigrants and U.S. communities more broadly. The second and third parts of the meeting will center on a guided discussion of two readings: “You Could Just Not Deport People” (Current Affairs), which examines deportation as a political choice rather than a necessity. “Trump and ICE Are Driving the Country Off a Cliff” (Jacobin), which analyzes recent ICE violence and enforcement surges as part of a broader pattern of state power and impunity. Each section will include time for discussion, reflection, and questions. It is the first in a two-part series, with a follow-up session focused on policy, organizing strategies, and what we can actually do. This event is open to all, and no prior knowledge is required. Reading the articles in advance is encouraged but not required.
