How does the tax system affect you? If you are self-employed, do trades work, or pick up seasonal jobs, you already know the answer is: not well. Join us on April 30th for the first session of our Political Education series on wealth inequality and the tax system. This two-part series, developed in collaboration with the Political Education Committee and the Finance Committee, takes a close look at how the current U.S. tax system under capitalism affects working people in Maine and what a socialist alternative could look like. Session 1 will cover: Wealth inequality in the national and Maine context How the tax system punishes irregular and seasonal income The self-employment tax burden How the tax code actively perpetuates wealth inequality We are excited to welcome guest speakers John F and Mark S, who will help ground the discussion in real-life impacts for Maine workers. The session will close with a facilitated discussion This event is open to all members and community members. This is a hybrid event. Join us in person at the Maine DSA office (address shared with registered attendees 24 hours before the event) or online via Zoom (link provided upon registration).
