Red Round Table: A Strategic Response to Overturning Roe

Late on May 2nd, Politico broke the news that a leaked majority decision draft from the Supreme Court indicated that Roe v. Wade will be overturned in the coming months. Without this landmark case that established the constitutional right to an abortion for the last 49 years, as many as 26 states are expected to quickly ban abortion either partially or totally. This decision will have catastrophic effects on the lives of millions of people across the country. Protests against the Supreme Court decision were immediate and continue to grow. MHVDSA released a statement within hours and organized a 100-person protest in Kingston alongside the Sarahana for Assembly campaign. But with Democrats failing to enshrine abortion rights in law for the last five decades, and their recent attempt falling 11 votes short in the Senate, the essential question remains: What is to be done? Join MHVDSA on Thursday, May 19th at 8 pm for an open discussion of how we can strategically respond to Roe v. Wade being overturned, including things like: - The pre-Roe era, the gradual erosion of abortion access, and the implications of the forthcoming reversal of abortion rights at the federal level - Going beyond "Just Vote Blue" liberalism and examining methods of leveraging existing power while building new power between reproductive rights and other movements like racial justice and labor - Examples of successful organizing/mobilizing for abortion rights here and abroad, historically and presently - How to frame the issue against the rhetoric used by anti-abortion crowd, including how to make our narrative robust and inclusive The fight ahead will by no means be easy. But together, we can organize a movement to defend the right to an abortion once and for all. All are welcome to join, no reading or preparation required. RSVP for Zoom link. To stay up to date on DSA's organizing for reproductive justice and find your local abortion fund, visit ProtectAbortion.org.
