Resisting the Hostile Environment in Public Services

Join us on 7 April 2022 at 6pm for an online seminar on how we can reach out to public services such as social services and local authorities, to join together in solidarity to resist the hostile environment! Details: This is an online seminar to bring together in solidarity, individuals, community groups and the public servants to resist the hostile environment policies in public services. The Hostile Environment refers to a set of legislations or policies implemented to make the UK as hostile as possible for migrants and people seeking asylum, in order to deter them from coming or staying in the country. 10 years of this policy, however, reveals not only its ineffectiveness, but also cruelty to individuals it targets but also communities at large. Public servants such as social workers are often put in impossible positions to enforce these policies, which often conflict with the very idea of public service. We will hear from speakers from Social Workers Without Borders and Positive Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers (PAFRAS) on the training that they have offered to local authorities to raise awareness about the hostile environment policies, how to resist it and how to support migrants with complex immigration issues. We will also cover how the Solidarity Knows No Borders Political Education Group can support individuals, organisations and charities to reach out to their local authorities. What is the Solidarity Knows No Borders (SKNB) Network? The SKNB network is a community of grassroots migrant justice organisations, groups and individuals working in solidarity to end hostility and racism against migrants and refugees. As a community, we organise and strategise, share resources to build collective campaigns and actions. We collaborate in working groups, such as the Political Education Group, to show up for each other and push for short-term and long-term change. -- Please note this seminar will take place online. Registered participants will receive the seminar link via email closer to the event date.
