Join us for a hands-on green initiative to help restore an area of woodland and create a thriving habitat for local wildlife- and raise much needed funds for our local party! Around 2,000m² of land is being given a new lease of life. It had poor soil on purchase and was planted with dense rows of Norwegian spruce intended for Christmas tree harvesting. Over time the mono-culture area became degraded, and the Forestry Commission identified concerns over potential that this type of woodland could be a perfect habitat for buck tooth bark beetle, a pest they are keen to prevent from getting a foothold in Southern England. Grant-funding has enabled clearing of the spruce, making way for a diverse mix of native tree species that will better reflect the character of the Wealden landscape. We can re-invigorate the area with native broadleaf species like oak, sycamore, hazel and cherry to create a natural habitat for native wildlife. Now comes the exciting part: planting around 300 native trees! By introducing native species, we can help create a woodland that: 🌿 Supports biodiversity by providing food, shelter and nesting opportunities for birds, insects and other wildlife. 🐝 Strengthens local ecosystems by planting trees that have evolved alongside our native wildlife. 🌳 Improves woodland resilience through greater diversity of tree species, helping the area adapt to future environmental challenges. 🌍 Contributes to a healthier environment by storing carbon, improving soil structure and helping manage water naturally. 🌱 Creates a lasting legacy that we can watch develop and flourish over the years to come. As part of our WGP green activities, this is a fantastic opportunity to get outdoors, get our hands dirty, learn from one another and make a tangible difference to the local environment. Whether you're an experienced tree planter or a complete beginner, your help will be welcome. There's a bonus, too! For every tree planted £2 will be donated directly to WGP — so your efforts will benefit both the woodland and our community. Please let us know if you can stay beyond 12pm, we will make sure that everyone gets some food and a lunch break. Come along, get involved, share some expertise, enjoy a bit of fresh air and help us put down roots for the future. Let's grow something good together!
