The South Brooklyn Branch is hosting a three part study group on racism and abolition in the United States. This is open to anyone who wants to discuss these topics in light of the Black uprising against police brutality and systemic racism. The history of slavery, Jim Crow, and the 'war on drugs' has shaped this country as much as slave rebellions, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, and BLM. The history and dynamics are alive and well. Time to discuss and draw inspiration from the Black struggle, then and now, alongside the ongoing protests. Friday, July 3rd, 6pm Week 1: Abolition Readings: Angela Davis, Are Prisons Obsolete? https://collectiveliberation.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Are_Prisons_Obsolete_Angela_Davis.pdf Audio: Interview with Ruth Wilson Gilmore (Part 1): https://theintercept.com/2020/06/10/ruth-wilson-gilmore-makes-the-case-for-abolition/ Friday, July 17th, 6pm Week 2: The Roots of US Racism Readings: Slavery, Race and Ideology in the United States https://www.solidarity-us.org/pdfs/cadreschool/fields.pdf The Legacy of Black Reconstruction https://www.jacobinmag.com/2018/08/web-du-bois-black-reconstruction-civil-rights Audio: Black Reconstruction in America https://wearemany.org/a/2011/07/black-reconstruction-in-america Slavery and the Origins of Racism https://wearemany.org/a/2015/07/slavery-and-origins-of-racism Friday, July 31st, 6pm Week 3: From Civil Rights to Black Lives Matter Readings: From #BLM to Black Liberation by Keeanga Yamahtta-Taylor, Chapters 2 and 3 https://www.haymarketbooks.org/books/778-from-blacklivesmatter-to-black-liberation -Chapter 2: From Civil Rights to Colorblind -Chapter 3: Black Faces in High Places The Combahee River Collective Statement: http://circuitous.org/scraps/combahee.html Audio: From Civil Rights to Black Power - https://wearemany.org/a/2016/07/from-civil-rights-to-black-power From Civil Rights to Black Lives Matter - https://wearemany.org/v/from-civil-rights-to-blacklivesmatter
