Come speak at City Hall in support of more land use reforms to create more housing near public transit, increase transit ridership, and create more walkable neighborhoods! On May 16th, City Council will vote on reforms that would: Allow for the construction of multi-family housing (with an affordability requirement for 15% of units) for properties within a half mile of the future Project Connect light rail stops. This would lead to more people being able to conveniently use the light rail, thus increasing ridership, funding, and public support for future transit expansion. It also means reduced traffic in the areas along the light rail, reduced environmental pollution, and fewer traffic injuries and deaths. Enable the creation of 63,000 homes by changing the rules that prevent multi-family housing from being built near single family housing. In early 2024, Austin’s median rent dropped significantly more than every other similarly sized city because we built 10,000 new homes. Just imagine how much further the rent could drop if even more homes are created as a result of this reform! Reduce the minimum lot size of single family houses, thus making it easier to build starter homes. For more information about these proposals, check out https://urbanism.guide/austin/issues/etod_and_compatibility/ Let’s make this a reality by showing City Council how excited you are about more housing options, more transit access, and cheaper rent. Speakers will start at 10 AM but will likely last for many hours. If there is any chance you are able to speak, either virtually or in-person, between 10 AM and 7 PM, we urge you to do so. Sign up for speaking at City Hall will open the Monday before the meeting, but by RSVPing here we will ensure you get the correct sign up link and we will be helping to coordinate day of to ensure you know the time window in which you’ll be speaking. In the event that you are supportive of these proposals, but are unable to speak at the meeting you can register your support and decline to speak on the Speaker Registration Form. Doing this helps City Council track the amount of support for these proposals, regardless of whether they were able to speak at the meeting that day. You can still make your voice heard!
