IAM Union and the Hawkeye Area Labor Council are holding a rally in support of the hundreds of IAM Local 1526 members employed at the Whirlpool facility whose jobs are being moved to Mexico by Whirlpool. On February 16th, Whirlpool sent a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act notice outlining their plan to lay off 350 highly skilled workers at their Amana production facility in March 2026. The skill and dedication of this workforce have helped make Whirlpool the successful, trusted brand that it is today. It is a disgrace that Whirlpool has decided to abandon these workers and the state of Iowa, refusing to extend the same loyalty these workers have shown the company over the years. Stand in solidarity with us in support of these loyal American workers who are being abandoned by Whirlpool. For generations, hard-working Machinists Union members have devoted their lives to making high-quality home appliances at this facility. IAM Union research shows Whirlpool has invested more than $1 billion in Mexico over the last 20 years, tripling its workforce there, while the Amana facility, which once employed more than 3,000 workers, could be reduced to as few as 500 to 600 workers following the March 9 layoffs and anticipated second-quarter cuts. The Amana production plant remains the largest employer in Iowa County and is a vitally important piece of the state economy. If allowed to continue as planned, the impact of these layoffs on the regional economy and its residents will be immense. Whirlpool’s plan to move the majority of these U.S. manufacturing jobs to their growing production facilities in Mexico is a slap in the face to these workers, the state of Iowa and manufacturing workers across the United States. Join us us in demanding that Whirlpool halt these planned layoffs and demonstrate a real commitment to the state of Iowa and domestic manufacturing by investing in their Iowa workforce and production capacity. IAM International President Brian Bryant sent letters to every member of the Iowa Congressional delegation and President Trump. Speakers will include: IAM Midwest Territory Chief of Staff Terry Kimmel, on behalf of IAM Midwest General Vice President Sam Cicinelli Rick Moyle, Executive Director, Hawkeye Area Labor Council AFL-CIO Kerry Waddell, IAM District 6 Assistant Directing Business Representative Iowa Attorney General Candidate Nate Willems Elected Officials IAM Local 1526 members who work at the Whirlpool facility in Amana.
