The Crisis in Haiti: A Historical and Political Conversation

	<thumbnail_url>https://actionnetwork.org//images/generic_facebook.jpg</thumbnail_url>

The crisis in Haiti is worsening. People are rebelling against a brutal regime headed by an illegitimate president, Juvenel Mosie. He is ruling by decree with no functioning Lower House or Senate since January 2020 and is refusing to leave office as his term ended in February 2021. The current dictatorial regime is a product of a long lasting US imperialism and direct US/UN military occupation of Haiti for the past seventeen years. At the same time, Haiti continues to be the poorest country in the Latin America and Caribbean region. It also remains among the poorest countries in the world as well as among the most unequal countries in the world. Haiti has a glorious history. It was the first country to defeat slavery and colonialism. The first independent country in Caribbean and Latin America. So, how is all of this connected? In this webinar, the speakers will discuss the humanitarian crisis in Haiti, and provide a historical context to the current crisis going back to 1905, when the US invaded Haiti for the first time. It will then focus on the significance of President Aristide in recent Haitian history. Register here Moderator: Paul Christian Namphy is the Lead Organizer at the Family Action Network Movement (FANM) and specializes in leading immigration-related advocacy at the organizational level. Namphy has close to 20 years of professional experience in Haiti and the United States, in fields which include community advocacy, rights, and activism in South Florida’s Haitian Community. Speakers: Pierre Labossiere is a veteran labor and human rights activist. In 1991, he co-founded the Haiti Action Committee in solidarity with the popular movement in Haiti struggling to restore democracy after the military coup against President Aristide. Pierre is also a board member of the Haiti Emergency Relief Fund. Robert Roth is a co-founder of the Haiti Action Committee. Robert was a high school history teacher in San Francisco for 30 years and is now an instructional coach for new teachers. A lifelong activist, he was part of the Central America solidarity movement in the 1980’s and 1990’s and has worked for years to free political prisoners in the U.S.
