Community Town Hall to Close the Murphy Oil Site

For decades the Murphy Drill Site at 2126 W. Adams Blvd. has harmed community health. The oil operators have repeatedly violated the law and the site’s operating conditions. Meanwhile the City has refused to give our community the same protections it gave to wealthier, whiter, West LA neighborhoods more than a quarter century ago. Years of community advocacy have finally moved the City of LA to schedule a Nuisance Abatement Revocation public hearing to consider closing the drill site. Program: Community testimonies: Hear from residents that have experienced health harms and other negative impacts of the Murphy oil site. Regulatory violations: An overview of the operator’s history of regulatory violations that threaten the health, safety and wellbeing of our community Health harms: Dr. Jill Johnston from the University of California at Irvine will share research about public health harms of oil drill sites, including her research on the cardiovascular and respiratory harms from living near the Murphy Drill Site. Legal landscape: Earthjustice attorneys, Angela Johnson-Meszaros and Byron Chan, will discuss the nuisance abatement revocation process and explain the most compelling arguments for the closure of the Murphy Drill Site. Public hearing preparation: Receive materials to support your preparation for giving public comment at the virtual public hearing. Lunch Organizers: Redeemer Community Partnership is a nonprofit community-based organization that has organized our South LA community since 1992. Our mission is to organize neighbors to create a healthy, safe, opportunity-rich community where children, youth, and their families thrive. RCP is a founding member of STAND-LA. Holman United Methodist Church has been at the vanguard of the Civil Rights movement and social justice advocacy for the last 81 years. The church is a founding member of STAND-LA. Stand Together Against Neighborhood Drilling (STAND-LA) is a racial and environmental justice coalition of community groups working for and with Angelenos on the front lines to end urban oil extraction.
