You're not alone. Millions of New Yorkers cannot afford their energy bills due to inflation, financial impacts from the COVID-19 pandemic, inefficient homes and volatile fossil fuel prices. We will help you determine eligibility for debt relief and connect you with other programs that can help reduce energy bills this winter. There will be free application assistance and Spanish translation services available. More about debt relief: On January 19, 2023, the State Public Service Commission approved a $672 million program to pay off past due electric and natural gas bills for eligible customers. Credits will automatically be applied to eligible customer accounts and no application is necessary. No service terminations for non-payment will occur while credits are processed. Debts that accrued after May 1, 2022 are not eligible for relief and will remain on the account even after bill relief is applied. Identified low-income customers that received a bill credit in 2022 are not eligible for additional relief in 2023. Low-income customers are eligible for a monthly bill discount! Be sure to bring the following with you: Your utility bill; some form of ID; and a copy of your benefits award letter (if you have one). *Benefit programs that can qualify you for your utility's low-income bill discount program include HEAP, SNAP, Lifeline, Medicaid, SSI, Veterans Disability or Survivors Pension, Federal Public Housing Assistance, TANF, Head Start (if living on Indigenous lands), and others. This event is sponsored and hosted by the Public Utility Law Project, Assembly Member Pamela Hunter, and Alliance for a Green Economy
