It’s being used by ICE to track immigrants. Big Tech is surveilling protesters. And police officers across the country have used it to stalk former spouses. Whether you’re walking to the park or driving down the street, chances are you are being surveilled by Big Tech as well as local and federal law enforcement. In response to this surveillance state, Rep. Rashida Tlaib just introduced the Get the Flock Out of Our Communities Act, which prohibits federal funds from being used to purchase or operate any automated mass surveillance systems, including Flock license plate readers. It also requires state and local governments to drop Flock, or related contracts in order to remain eligible for federal grants. This is the only bill in Congress that completely prohibits federal funds from being used to purchase or run automated mass surveillance, including facial recognition technology, which has been shown to falsely identify our residents because of the technology’s racist inaccuracies.
