We, Jews who believe in safety for all, have a critical role to play in stopping them. The Trump administration is cracking down on free speech, starting with those advocating for Palestinian human rights. They have abducted Mahmoud Khalil and they plan to expand this repression by reintroducing a Muslim Ban and ignoring the US federal court’s power to stop illegal deportations. The MAGA regime claims they’re doing this to fight antisemitism while at the same time actively endangering Jews in the U.S. and Israel/ Palestine: they’ve nominated an antisemitic Christian Zionist to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Israel and they’ve cheered as Netanyahu’s government renews its assault on Gaza, killing hundreds of Palestinians and sacrificing the Israeli hostages who remain in captivity. We’ve seen this before. Our Jewish ancestors have suffered under authoritarian regimes, and we know from their experience that restricting civil liberties only feeds antisemitism. To fight for true safety for Jews and all people, we must preserve our democratic freedom. This is a critical moment for our democracy and our communities. Our synagogues, JCCs, day schools, federations, and other centers of Jewish communal life must pick a side: will we fight antisemitism by protecting civil liberties for all, or will we fall for Trump’s trap and comply with authoritarianism? The Trump administration is depending on our community to remain silent while enacting authoritarianism in our names. As members of these community institutions, we have a responsibility to deny the Trump administration our complicity by loudly rejecting the MAGA agenda.
