Not only that, but there are systemic barriers in our society that mean we find we are often short of candidates willing to stand who are women, people of colour, young people, disabled, and from other under-represented groups. We are aiming for a full slate of diverse candidates across England and Wales at the next General Election - that means over 570 Greens standing for Parliament, for the first time. To make this happen, we are recruiting a pool of General Election candidates who would be willing to stand outside of their home area, either somewhere else in their region, or even elsewhere in England or Wales. Could that be you? Standing in a General Election is different to council elections - if you're eligible to vote in General Elections, you can stand anywhere in the UK. And although it's usually helpful to be a local candidate, that tends to be lower on voters' list of priorities than which party they represent - and in fact sometimes a fresh outside voice can be exactly what's needed. What's involved? If selected, your level of commitment and activity as candidate would be decided in agreement with the local party(s), in line with their election plans. There are many things a General Election candidate can choose to do - but every candidate is part of a team, who can help with standing - eg, substitute speakers/neighbouring candidates may be able to attend hustings if candidates are busy, and so on. Making sure we have a candidate is more important than exactly who is doing the work.
