Period. Full stop. Yet, we are facing again a vicious attack against the poor. There are dozens of facts and all are important, but right now I want you to know only one: 1 in 7 Mainers relies on food stamps. You may be one of them or, like me, you may have once relied on Food stamps. The current Farm bill will take away or cut food stamps from 2 million Americans most of whom are families with children. The bill will add work requirements and Representative Poliquin is touting Maine as an example of a successful program! Well, we KNOW that under LePage’s administrations implementation of work force requirements in 2014 that 40,000 Mainers were thrown off of the SNAP program. 16.4% of Maine households cannot afford a diet that provides adequate nutrition. Maine is now tied for the highest hunger rates in our country. So, like we’ve done when the ACA was under attack, when we needed to stand with DREAMers and when Congress proposed tax cuts for the wealthy and corporations we need to fight back.
