It can take days or weeks for lawyers and family members to learn the location of their loved ones, if they can find them at all. ICE’s online detainee locator is unreliable, untransparent, and unaccountable. And with Border Patrol it can be even worse, with people often never appearing on the locator at all. That’s why Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib has introduced the Find Our Families Act, which would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to maintain an accurate and detailed online detainee locator system for anyone detained by ICE or CBP. We’re demanding justice for people who’ve been detained by ICE and Border Patrol. The bill also holds ICE and CBP accountable by including compliance mechanisms, requiring these rogue agencies to inform families and attorneys when someone is transferred or experiences a medical emergency. It mandates visitation access and new public reporting requirements.
